RPG Sketch 36
A ranger's real job: keep the fighter alive.
About the game
RPG Sketch 36 is a free browser micro-RPG built around what a ranger is actually for. Scout a huge overworld as Catch, who can escape every battle in the game, then walk Boxos — a fighter who can't run from anything — along the safe routes you've proven. It's entry 36 of a weekly series that rebuilds the same tiny RPG around one new idea each time.

Game features
- A two-character party: Catch the ranger scouts the map while Boxos the fighter does the heavy hitting
- Catch can escape any battle in the game — the Quicksand monster is the single exception
- Boxos walks slower and must fight whatever crosses his path
- One large interconnected overworld: grass encounters differ by region, and forest tables change across rivers
- The great southern veldt hides a different encounter table in every screen, with no visible boundaries
- Question-mark locations only reveal themselves when you visit in person
- Entry 36 of a weekly micro-RPG series that rebuilds the same game around a new idea each week
How to play
Travel as a pair: Catch scouts, Boxos fights. Use Catch's speed to range across the map first — a battle is never a commitment while you can always run from it, and only the Quicksand monster blocks escape. Note where monsters cluster, how the grass changes at region borders, and what hides behind the map's question marks. Then plan Boxos's route. He walks slower and must fight whatever he meets, so lead him along paths your scouting proved quiet — or through fights he can win. If the main road turns ugly, remember the alternate endpoint waiting in Harpoon Alley.
Tips & strategies
- 1.Scout before you escort: a route that looks short on the map can cut straight through the southern veldt, where every screen rolls its own encounter table.
- 2.Treat Quicksand as a wall, not a speed bump — it's the one monster Catch can't run from.
- 3.Grass encounter tables reset at region borders, so a meadow you memorized can turn unfamiliar one step past the line.
- 4.Forest encounters change across rivers — don't assume the same woods stay safe on both banks.
- 5.Send Catch to every question mark first. Locations only identify themselves in person, and walking Boxos into an unknown site is a gamble.

Frequently asked questions
Is RPG Sketch 36 free?
Yes — it plays free in your browser, and the developer also offers a Windows download on the game's itch.io page.
What is the game about?
It's a micro-RPG about the ranger class: you scout a dangerous overworld with Catch, who can always flee, then guide Boxos — a fighter who can't run — along the safe paths you found.
Can you run away from battles?
As Catch, always — the Quicksand monster is the one fight that blocks escape. Boxos, the fighter, has to see every battle through.
How long does it take to finish?
It's a short game by design — one week's 'sketch' — but the overworld is deliberately big, and route planning is most of the play time.
Who made RPG Sketch 36?
sraëka lillian, as entry 36 of a weekly series of micro-RPG experiments, each rebuilt around a single new idea.
