Bellfoundry: Temper the Night

Heat the metal, time the swing, ring all five bells.

About the game

Bellfoundry: Temper the Night is a tiny precision timing game about bellfounding. Hold to heat the metal, strike when both markers meet, and forge five bells in one night.

Game features

  • Five named bells in a fixed order, Dawn through Star, each with its own target heat and swing speed
  • Up to 100 accuracy points per bell and 500 per shift, scored from how precisely heat and timing land together
  • A heat gauge with a marked target band and a swinging pointer with a green center zone to aim for
  • 20 active seconds per bell, and the clock only runs while you are stoking and aiming
  • Controls that work on keyboard with Space and Enter or on touch with a two-finger hold and tap
  • Procedural bell tones synthesized in the browser, detuned slightly when a strike lands imprecisely
  • No payment, account or network requirement, and the shift pauses itself when the tab loses focus

How to play

Each shift forges five bells in a fixed order, and every bell gives you 20 active seconds. Hold Space, or the orange stoke button, to push the heat toward the target band and release to let it cool; heat climbs quickly while held and drifts down once you let go. A pointer swings beneath the crucible. Strike with Enter, or the Strike bell button, at the moment the pointer crosses its green center and the heat sits inside the band. Each bell pays up to 100 points, with heat accuracy multiplying timing accuracy, and all five ring together as a closing chord. Escape pauses the shift at any time.

Tips & strategies

  1. 1.The heat band is generous but the pointer is not: full points need the pointer near the middle of its swing, so watch one full pass before your first strike.
  2. 2.Heat moves fast while you hold stoke and slower as it cools, so use short taps to nudge the gauge inside the band instead of long holds.
  3. 3.Later bells swing faster than early ones, and the final bell is the quickest of the five; bank comfortable strikes on bells one and two before the pace picks up.
  4. 4.A wild strike can score as little as a timeout, so when the pointer has already passed center, waiting for the next pass costs nothing but clock.
  5. 5.Turn the sound on for free feedback: a clean strike rings true while an imprecise one comes out slightly off-pitch.
  6. 6.The verdict at 400 of 500 is a masterful night, and a zero on one bell does not end the shift, so chase the remaining four rather than restarting.

Frequently asked questions

Is Bellfoundry: Temper the Night free to play?

Yes. It runs entirely in your browser with no payment, no account and no download.

Can I play it on a phone or tablet?

Yes. Hold the orange stoke button with one finger and tap Strike with a second finger; on keyboard, Space stokes and Enter strikes.

Does the game save progress or keep a best score?

No. Every shift of five bells stands alone and nothing is stored between sessions.

Why did the game pause on its own?

The shift pauses itself whenever the page is hidden or loses focus, so an accidental tab switch costs no time. Resume from the pause button or Escape.

How is each bell scored?

Up to 100 points per bell, 500 per shift: heat distance from the target band multiplies timing accuracy at the moment of the strike, and a timeout scores zero.
